SAN JOSE, CATo expand access to higher education for teachers north of its San José campus, The National Hispanic University (NHU) is offering its M.A. in Education program in a hybrid format that includes courses at NHU’s campus, online, and at the East Palo Alto Educational Center. The center, at 763 Green St. in East Palo Alto, is part of the Sequoia Union High School District. NHU is accepting applications now for the semester starting Aug. 29.

“At NHU, we understand the challenges that teachers face in their diverse classrooms and with balancing their own education with their personal and professional lives,” said Dr. David López, president of NHU. “We are very excited to be working with the Sequoia school district to provide a convenient and innovative way to help teachers learn how to improve student achievement in their classrooms. Educating the next generation of students, especially English language learners and students from disadvantaged backgrounds, is crucial to maintaining America’s competitiveness in the global economy.”

“NHU’s mission and vision align closely to the Sequoia district’s vision. The strong partnership will allow teachers to better meet the needs of underrepresented learners,” said James Lianides, Ed.D., superintendent of the Sequoia Union High School District. The district’s student body is 44% Latino.

NHU’s M.A. in Education program with a specialization in Teaching and Learning includes a new “signature course”—Differentiated Instruction in Practice—designed to help teachers learn best practices for personalizing instruction to individual students to help improve learning outcomes throughout their classrooms.

The courses are provided in a sequence designed to build upon what students have learned in previous courses and to keep students together as a cohort as they proceed through the program. Online courses use a combination of multimedia, practical assignments and online discussions led by expert faculty members to provide an engaging learning experience. At least one course is offered at NHU’s campus on Story Road, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the resources and staff there.

NHU is also offering three new concentrations in its B.A. in Child Development program: Early Biliteracy Development, Early Intervention and School-Age. Most courses are offered at NHU’s campus in San José, with some courses available online. This program gives students the opportunity to explore the latest research in child development and get hands-on field experience. It has been designed to include the competencies and guidelines established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and structured to meet the California Child Development Permit Matrix requirements for employment in preschools, child development centers and after-school sites.
